The Historic Claymont Tour 2018

Experience local history in the Claymont area by visiting sites from the Colonial and Post-Colonial period to the mid 1950’s. Each site is unique and holds a place in Delaware and U.S. history. Participants will receive a map and wristband at the Claymont Community Center and may then drive, walk or ride our free shuttle bus to visit the following sites:

Claymont Community Center
Claymont History Room
Claymont Stone School
Church of the Ascension
Darley House
Gebhart Funeral Home
Holy Rosary Pastoral Center at the Grubb/Worth Mansion
The Patio at Archmere Academy
Robinson House

Special presenters will be featured such as:

  • Henry Ward, the Time Chef. Travel back in time when you sample Native American dishes.
  • Meet a Civil Rights Pioneer, Sandy (Bernice Byrd) Couch and hear her firsthand account of the 1952 integration of Claymont High School.
  • Meet Virginia Tryon Smilack, whose father served on the Claymont School board and was instrumental in the desegregation of schools.

$10 ADMISSION FEE-Teachers and Seniors 60 +
$5 ADMISSION FEE- Children/students
$12 ADMISSION FEE -General public

Teachers may earn up to 6 clock hours for attending this event.

The Brandywine School District has approved PIP hours for attending this event. Teachers from other school districts, please contact us directly to find out if your district will authorize your clock hours.
